Soft Skills
What are Soft Skills? Soft Skills (also called 'people skills') are how people relate to each other and refer to the cluster of personality traits like communication, listening, engaging in dialogue, giving feedback, cooperating as a team member, contributing in meetings and resolving conflict. Increasingly, employers are recognising that Soft Skills play an integral part in what makes a business function successful, and ultimately, become more profitable.
Soft Skills complement "Hard skills". In the work environment, Hard Skills are the technical or administrative procedures related to an organisation's core business. Hard Skills are easy to observe, quantify and measure. They are also easy to train, because most of the time the skill sets are brand new to the learner and no 'unlearning' is involved. By contrast, Soft Skills are typically hard to observe, quantify and measure but are a requirement for everyday life as much as they are a requirement for the work environment.
Until recently, psychologists believed that core aspects of cognitive processing (the process of thinking, the operation of remembering and the obtaining & storing of knowledge) were essentially fixed from a young age, with little or no room for improvement. However, modern research into the brain is dramatically changing our understanding of these issues. We now know that, with the right kind of stimulation and training - the brain can dramatically change and remodel itself to become more efficient and effective.
